Keep the light burning!
Guys. Listen. We posted a new design at The Risc Store and it is now for sale. It is the classic Streetlight Manifesto logo on a white shirt. Now - if you’re a spiller - you might want to avoid this. But if you are a proud grown up with control of your faculties and have yet to make an enemy of gravity - this shirt is for you. Get yours HERE.
Those who know me well, know that I like to think big, but not in a sort of let’s topple the world kind of way, but in having an open discourse about the changes that are occuring all around us. And being a science/math kind of guy I like data.
So I wouldn’t call it a revolution, but the paradigm shift is definitely fully underway
Take for instance - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jakehimself/flint-and-tinder-premium-mens-underwear/
I just funded the creation of some higher end underwear that will be made entirely in the usa from field to finished product. Why? Because the only other option for having something made in the us is American Apparel - and it’s not high end, and falls apart quickly. So we the consumers are now able to push the market where we want. Big brands take notice, take notice now. If I were at a big clothing company I’d start an R&D unit, and have them start putting out ideas on kickstarter or some other similar collaborative environment - test out new ideas based on initial response, and then shift the main brand in that direction.
This is the earmark of our generation, we don’t care what you are trying to tell us. You need to listen to us. We don’t want to own cars, we just need to be able to use them. We want partners, not masters. If you aren’t willing to listen, we will find someone who is and do business with them.
My food comes straight from the farm - where I get to know the people toiling over it, and know how they treat the land - sustainably. http://turtlebaycsa.wordpress.com/

My power comes from the sun and the wind
My clothing comes from the USA and I opt for organic whenever possible. And I’ll let you know when I see a t-shirt and organic options up on Kickstarter
Last basic need is shelter, and as soon as I see a rent to own company or COOP, you damn well better believe I’ll put my money where my mouth is. Who knows maybe I will even start it myself.
So there you go Fortune 500 - ball is in your court, let’s see if you still remember how to play the game.
What was that about not following history…
Sorry - I just don’t see it - literally.
I understand the need for Pandora’s need to try innovate it’s ad offerings - but there has to be some data to back up what I’m going to reference anecdotally. When people go to facebook they are in the mode of trying to find out what other people are doing - and they are open to discovery. When people go to Pandora they want to listen to music - now. Yes they might check out what others are listening too on occasion - most likely when they come back to their desk or whatever - but that wasn’t the premise on which the community was formed. Thus to think the users will go to the display often is not a good assumption.
I am a fan of the ad experiences that unlocked listening for a period of time (play with an ad, get X hours uninterrupted) and I hope they continue to do those. Also the audio centered ads (Kim Jong Ill for grub hub) were better. But why not innovate with other things - like the information you already have available. The service should know where you are and what time of day it is. Therefore why not ads about food - coffee in the morning, delivery services at lunch, and restaurants/food stores towards the end of the day. Even nicer would be if they could take audio input so I could say, “yes please bring me a dunkin donuts coffee” or some other thing - maybe I have to sing the subway $5 foot long song - I don’t know - but what I do know is I need music at work - not music videos. Not even going to go in to what happens when I am driving. :)
When we asked consumers about their interest in location-based services, we found a great deal of positive sentiment: 58% of consumers expressed enthusiasm for being able to scan barcodes with their smartphone to find out where a product was available more cheaply nearby or online.
- surprised it’s actually that high
A step in the right direction Mikie D’s - now bring it to the USA
Great insight in to groupon’s issues.
